Don’t Let The Devil - Killer Mike, El-P, thankugoodsir
Killer Mike releases his first solo music outside of Run The Jewels in a decade.
Hip-hop is unique, in that there's much to learn about beyond just the artists who top the charts today. More so than any genre, there's a storyline that threads throughout.
Hip-hop started out as underground music, it was a refuge for people. The early tracks often featured stripped-back production, the lyrics more focused on commenting on social issues than personal ones. Finding artists still making that music today can be rare.
Run The Jewels, a duo made up of hip-hop legends, Killer Mike and El-P, have been delivering old-school style music in a modern way since they formed in April 2013. They've released four albums together, with the latest dropping in June 2020 during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. Despite their success together, they haven’t released anything on their own in a decade – until now.
Killer Mike announced a solo album titled 'Michael' in April 2023, three weeks after the duo announced their 10th-anniversary tour. The album, which promises to be his most autobiographical to date, features production from No ID and Little Shalimar. The first single from the album, 'Don't Let The Devil,' features El-P on the second verse.
Killer Mike remains one of the most important voices in hip-hop, with a willingness to speak his mind and a total independence as an artist. And now one of the biggest in hip-hop has brand new music, and his most independent to date.
