Since We Ain't Together - Nia Chennai

Nia Chennai Makes a strong soulful debut with 'Since We Ain't Together'"

The Brit Awards 2023 took place last weekend, with notable performances from some of the biggest names in music, including Harry Styles, Lizzo, and Stormzy. However, the event was overshadowed by a notable omission of R&B singers in the Best Pop & R&B Album category, as well as the absence of any women in the Best Artist category.

Ironically, the UK is experiencing a flourishing scene of women in R&B, as highlighted by today's One of One, Nia Chennai. Throughout the history of music, certain artists have had a lasting influence for decades, with Amy Winehouse being one of the most recent examples. The children who grew up listening to her are now producing some of the strongest music in the country. Jorja Smith, Mahalia, Cleo Sol, Pip Millet, Joy Crookes, Tiana Major9, Flo, and RAYE are some of the names currently making waves in the R&B scene.

Nia Chennai, a South London singer, is a new addition to this exciting and flourishing scene. She released her debut single last October and followed it up with "Since We Ain't Together," a soulful track that draws on classic R&B sounds. The song ties together Chennai's calming and soulful vocals with a playful rap that adds a contemporary twist to the track.

The Brit Awards' failure to recognize the quality of talent omitted has shed light on the strength of the R&B scene that we are living in right now. Hopefully, this will be taken into account in next year's awards, and the genre's contribution to the UK music scene will be properly recognized. Nia Chennai's debut and follow-up singles are an exciting start to what promises to be a long and impressive career.
