Need You No More - Chappaqua Wrestling
Chappaqua Wrestling delivers an anthem for a new generation on 'Plus Ultra'
In 1979, one of the most iconic punk rock bands released an album that would break them out of the UK and bring them worldwide recognition. Known for their political statements wrapped in a blend of guitars, drums, and a singer with the ability to cut through the wall of noise, The Clash's Joe Strummer was a raw and urgent singer who showcased the passion he had for the lyrics he was performing.
Fast forward to 2023, and the spirit of punk rock is alive and well in a band influenced by that very band The Clash. Chappaqua Wrestling formed from the friendship of two founding members, Charlie Woods and Jake Mac, who met in Brighton and bonded over their shared love of music. Inspired by the music of Manchester, they moved there for University, and soaked up everything they could before moving back down south to form a band that defines itself by its lyrics, building on influences from political singers gone by.
It took a while for Chappaqua Wrestling's debut album to come, with the band dropping their one and only EP in 2017, leaving only breadcrumbs of singles since. But the lead up to their debut album has been strong, with a string of singles that have showcased the band's big and anthemic sound, leaving just enough space for those urgent and politically charged vocals to cut through.
And finally, on Friday 21st April, the album 'Plus Ultra' was released, drawing on all of the band's past influences, but intertwined with their modern realities. The album is a stunning, complete, and catchy work that leaves just the right amount of space to breathe between the big and anthemic sound of the band.
The album title, 'Plus Ultra,' has a Latin meaning for exploring uncharted waters, and if this is just the start, this is going to be a fun ride to see them rise. In Charlie's words, "We can't get a mortgage anymore, but we can still sit down with each other and have a good time." That sentiment shines through on this album, and it definitely won't be long until they can afford a mortgage!
