Just Come Home with Me Tonight - Joesef
The soulful sound of Glasgow on his debut album Permanent Damage.
There’s a heart-on-your-sleeve kind of attitude when you come from Glasgow, the kind where you're not shy to show your emotion, good or bad. Joesef first found a fan base in the east ends of the city by being sharp with his observations and emotions growing up. He made subtle references to things that only locals would know. But over the span of four years, he's taken that Glaswegian directness and connected it to a much larger group of people. And it's been a steady but convincing journey for him towards his debut album.
The last few months have been filled with captivating singles that created an atmosphere to prepare you for today, where his debut album Permanent Damage has finally dropped. It's a really stunning debut. It captures the emotion and loneliness of someone going through heartbreak as they move into a city that they don't know. But it manages to stay light on its feet due to the soulful vocals of Joesef. He's noted himself how he's inspired by the Motown records his mum used to play growing up. How they managed to hide a dark message within a gentle tone. Those influences are clear throughout the album, and there's even a touch of vintage soul on one of my stand out tracks Apt 22.
And that's the thing, the album keeps you guessing. There's songs where you find yourself dancing, and there's songs where you find yourself in a daze. Either way, 45 minutes slips away like it's nothing, because Permanent Damage feels as if Joesef is inviting you into his life in the east ends of Glasgow, and just like the city itself, you're swept away by its stories.
The One of One today, is "Just Come Home With Me Tonight" by Joesef. One of the lead singles off the debut album Permanent Damage dropped today. And I can already tip this guy for having a big year, because this album has so many different sides to it. So much to unpack, I can't wait to live with it for the rest of the year and see how it connects with everyone else.
