Fairytale - Mac Wetha, Rachel Chinouriri
Mac Wetha's progression from producing in NiNE8 COLLECTIVE to solo success
Mac Wetha is a musician who has been making waves in the underground music scene for the past eight years. He was first introduced to the industry as a member of the Nine8 Collective, a group of nine musicians who came together to create raw and underground music that matched the energy of the 1998 generation. The group was originally formed by Mac Wetha, Lava La Rue, and Biig Piig, and since then, each member has gone on to pursue their own independent careers.
Lava La Rue recently made her US debut at Coachella and Biig Piig has been growing rapidly in recent years, releasing her first long form project this coming Friday. Nayana IZ is also being tipped by multiple outlets as one to watch in 2023.
While the members of the Nine8 Collective have been busy with their own careers, Mac Wetha has been producing music for them to perform on. He has been constantly experimenting with different sounds and elements, trying to find the unexpected that matches the creativity of the collective. He has made hundreds of songs, but it was only in 2021 that he signed with the independent label Dirty Hit, as he looked to take centre stage and find his own sound in the vocals.
He brought that positive energy and the producer perspective in the music that he started creating, and on his latest track, "Fairytale," he teamed up with Rachel Chinouriri, who is also growing at a rapid pace and was recently listed on the BBC's Sound of 2023 list. Together, the track has a homemade feel to it, as if it were put together by two friends creating a throwaway track in their flat on a Sunday afternoon. The energy of the guitar and the back-to-back nature of the vocals really capture this feeling. The track was released just yesterday and is one of many recent singles that Mac Wetha has been releasing, all with a similar aesthetic when it comes to artwork. The latest track, "Fairytale," is an exciting glimpse into what looks like the lead up to a brand new EP from Mac Wetha.
